This approach to therapy is uniquely focused on personal growth and healing through
committed relationships. As human beings, we are relational by nature. Our personalities
are developed through intense experiences with other special human beings, the first of
whom were our primary caretakers. In varying degrees, we are wounded during these
first years of childhood and are not allowed to maintain access to our whole selves.
Committed relationship partners select each other for reasons that are related to the need
to heal the woundings of childhood and to a desire to reconnect with lost parts of
themselves. In Imago Relationship therapy, partners are taught how to understand and
use this agenda. They are guided in changing ineffective methods of communication and
relating so that, through the committed relationship, they are able to achieve their inherent
desire for connection and wholeness.
